CHAPTER 2 — WHAT SHE NEVER HAD

Two days later, no missing persons report had been filed.
No frantic parents.
No surveillance footage of anyone returning.
Just an abandoned newborn… and the girl who refused to walk away.
Lena sat in a small office, the baby sleeping against her chest. A social worker flipped through a thin file.
“You’ve been on your own for almost a year?” she asked.
Lena nodded.
“No family?”
“No one who’d come,” she replied.
The social worker sighed, then looked at the infant.
“And yet… you brought him here instead of running.”
“I didn’t want him to end up like me,” Lena said simply.
That answer lingered in the room long after she spoke it.
Later that afternoon, the officer returned—the same one from the station.
“We’re still searching,” he said. “But… no leads so far.”
Lena looked down at the baby.
“Does he have a name?” the officer asked.
She hesitated.
“I’ve been calling him Noah,” she admitted softly. “Just… so he wouldn’t feel like nobody.”
The officer’s expression shifted.
“Then Noah it is. For now.”
Days turned into weeks.
Still no one came.
But something else began to grow instead.
Routine.
Trust.
Connection.
Lena learned how to properly hold him, feed him, soothe him. Nurses showed her things no one had ever taught her—how to care, how to stay, how to be needed.

She wasn’t invisible.
