CHAPTER 3 — A NAME, A HOME, A FUTURE

Three months later, the hearing room was small but full.
The officer sat quietly in the back. The social worker stood beside Lena.
And in her arms, Noah slept peacefully.
“The court has reviewed all evidence,” the judge said. “No biological family has come forward. No claims have been made.”
Lena’s fingers tightened slightly around the baby.
“Given the circumstances… and the demonstrated care provided…” the judge continued, “we are prepared to make a decision regarding guardianship.”
The room held its breath.
The judge looked directly at Lena.
“You chose not to walk away when everyone else did.”
A pause.
“You chose responsibility when you had none given to you.”
Another pause.
“And sometimes… that is what makes a family.”
Lena’s eyes filled with tears.
“This court grants provisional guardianship of the child known as Noah… to Lena Carter.”
She didn’t realize she was crying until she felt the tears fall onto Noah’s blanket.
In the back, the officer smiled quietly.
Outside the courthouse, the world looked different.
Brighter.
Lena stepped into the sunlight, holding Noah close.
“You’re not nobody,” she whispered to him.
“And neither am I.”
For the first time in her life, she had something she’d never dared to believe in before.
Not just survival.
Not just another day.
But a future.
May you like
And she had found it…
By stopping when no one else would.
