Chapter 2: What Was Lost
Patricia led him inside. The house was small, modest—nothing like the life they once lived. Yet it was warm in a way his mansion had never been.
“You live here alone?” Michael asked.
“For a long time, yes,” she said. Then she added, “Not anymore.”
Before he could ask what she meant, a young woman stepped into the room.
She froze when she saw Michael.
“Mom… who is that?”
Michael felt the ground shift beneath him.
Mom.
Patricia turned to the young woman. “This is Michael Sanders.”
The girl’s eyes widened slightly, but there was no recognition—only curiosity.
“And this,” Patricia said, her voice softer now, “is Emma.”
Michael stared at her. She looked to be in her early twenties. Bright eyes. Strong posture. A quiet resilience.
“How…?” he began, his voice barely audible.
“I found out I was pregnant the day you told me to leave,” Patricia said.
Michael’s heart stopped.
“I didn’t tell you,” she continued. “Because you had already made your choice. You chose your company over us.”
Michael’s knees nearly gave out. He grabbed the back of a chair to steady himself.
“I have a daughter?” he whispered.
Patricia nodded.
Emma crossed her arms, watching him carefully. “You didn’t know about me?”
Michael shook his head, tears forming in his eyes. “No… I didn’t. But I should have. I should have been there.”
“For what?” Emma asked. “Birthdays you missed? School plays? The nights Mom worked two jobs just to keep us afloat?”
Each word hit like a hammer.
“I can’t change the past,” Michael said. “But I want to be here now. If you’ll let me.”
Emma didn’t respond right away.
Instead, she looked at Patricia.
Patricia met her gaze, then gave a small, encouraging nod.
Emma sighed. “You don’t get to just walk in and be my father.”
“I know,” Michael said. “I have to earn that.”
Silence filled the room.
Then Emma said, “Start by staying.”
Michael swallowed hard. “I will.”
For the first time in years, he wasn’t thinking about stock prices or failing deals.
