Chapter 1: The Seal

The ballroom didnât erupt.
It tightened.
Like a room that suddenly remembered it had lungsâbut forgot how to breathe.
Inspector Evelyn Hart didnât raise her voice again. She didnât need to. Authority wasnât volume. It was certainty.
Two uniformed officers moved in from the edges of the room, subtle but unmistakable. Guests shifted, whispers spreading like cracks through glass.
âMaâamââ the sommelier tried, stepping forward, forcing a smile that no longer fit his face. âThere must be some misunderstandingââ
Evelyn didnât look at him.
Her gaze remained on the bottle.
âVintage 1986 Halcyon Reserve,â she said quietly, almost to herself. âExcept Halcyon didnât produce a reserve that year.â
A ripple passed through the nearest cluster of donors.
Camillaâs arms tightened across her chest. âYouâre bluffing.â
Evelyn finally turned her headâslowly, deliberately. Her eyes were calm, but there was something underneath now. Not anger. Not humiliation.
Precision.
âThe lot code,â Evelyn continued, pointing with a napkin instead of her finger, âmatches a batch recalled six months ago in three countries.â
The sommelier swallowed.
Hard.
âThat batch,â Evelyn said, her voice cutting clean through the room, âwas flagged for contamination and illegal relabeling.â
Now the silence broke.
Not loudlyâbut unmistakably.
Camilla laughed again, but it came out thinner this time. âYou expect anyone here to believe that?â
Evelyn stepped closer.
âNot expect,â she said. âDocument.â
Across the room, a phone lifted higher. Then another.
Streaming.
Recording.
Watching.
The sommelierâs composure cracked first.
âMiss Vale,â he said under his breath, barely controlled, âwe need toââ
âStop talking,â Camilla snapped, but her voice shook.
May you like
Too late.
The room had already turned.
