Chapter 2: Beneath the Cellar

The Halcyon cellar smelled of oak, dust, and money.
But beneath thatâ
Something sour.
Evelyn walked ahead, heels quiet against the stone floor. The officers followed, along with a reluctant Camilla and a pale, sweating sommelier.
âOpen it,â Evelyn said.
The sommelier hesitated.
One of the officers stepped forward.
The key turned.
Inside, rows upon rows of bottles gleamed under soft amber lightâperfectly arranged, perfectly labeled.
Perfectly wrong.
Evelyn moved closer, lifting one bottle, then another. Her fingers traced labels, caps, seals.
âMass production dressed as heritage,â she murmured.
Camilla stood at the entrance, arms wrapped tightly nowânot in defiance, but in containment.
âYou donât understand this business,â she said. âDo you have any idea how much these collections are worth?â
âYes,â Evelyn said without looking up. âThatâs why people fake them.â
She turned, holding up a bottle.
âSame micro-print error,â she said. âSame adhesive residue.â
The officer beside her nodded, already documenting.
âMiss Vale,â he said carefully, âweâre going to need you to come with us for further questioning.â
Camillaâs composure fractured.
âThis is absurd,â she said, stepping back. âThis is my familyâs estate.â
Evelyn stepped forwardânot aggressive, not rushed.
Inevitable.
âThen you should know exactly whatâs in your cellar.â
Camilla opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.

Behind her, the sommelier closed his eyes.
Just for a second.
