Chapter 1 â The Silence After

The silence didnât just fill the ballroomâit pressed against every chest, every throat, every breath.
The heiress didnât move.
Her fingers, still raised in accusation just seconds ago, now trembled mid-air. The sharp edges of her anger collapsed into something fragile, something unrecognizable.
ââŠmy sister.â
The words echoed in her mind, distorting everything she thought she knew.
âNo,â she said quietly at first, almost to herself. Then louder, but not strongerâjust more desperate. âNo⊠thatâs not possible.â
The maid stood still, her posture straight despite the faint tremor in her shoulders. Her eyes didnât waver.
âYou were sent away,â the maid said softly. âToo young to remember.â
A murmur rippled through the crowd.
The butler took a step forward, his polished composure cracking. âMiss⊠forgive me, butâyour family did have another child.â
The heiress turned sharply, her breath catching. âThat was a lie. A rumor. My parents saidââ
âThey said she died,â the maid finished.
The words landed like a final blow.
The heiress staggered back a step, her heels scraping lightly against the marble. Her gaze droppedâto the shattered glass, to the red wine bleeding across the pristine floor like something irreversibly broken.
âWhy now?â she whispered.
The maidâs lips parted, but for a moment, no sound came out. When she finally spoke, her voice was barely steady.
âBecause Iâve spent my whole life watching you from a distance,â she said. âAnd tonight⊠I couldnât stay invisible anymore.â
The room held its breath.
May you like
And for the first time in her life, the heiress didnât know who she was standing above.
She only knew she wasnât standing alone anymore.
