Chapter 2 — Fractures

The night unraveled quickly after that.

The event dissolved into quiet chaos, but Ethan heard none of it. He had moved the young woman—her name was Anna—into a private room away from the crowd.

Away from judgment. Away from spectacle.

Now, seated across from her, he studied every detail of her face as though trying to memorize a lifetime in minutes.

“You have her eyes,” he said quietly.

Anna gave a faint, sad smile.
“That’s what everyone used to say.”

Used to.

The word lingered.

Ethan leaned forward, elbows on his knees, the photo still in his hands.
“Why didn’t she come to me?”

Anna hesitated.
“She said you had a life
a powerful one. She didn’t want to destroy it.”

A bitter breath escaped him.
“She underestimated how fragile that life really is.”

Outside the room, Victoria stood alone in the corridor. Her reflection stared back at her from the polished glass—perfect, composed
 but cracking.

For years, she had stood beside Ethan, building an empire of influence and appearances. And now, in a matter of minutes, everything felt threatened by a girl in a waitress uniform holding an old photograph.

Inside, Ethan’s voice softened further.
“Is she
?”

Anna nodded, eyes glistening but steady.
“She passed away three weeks ago.”

The words landed heavily.

Ethan closed his eyes. Regret surged through him, sharp and merciless.

“I should have been there,” he murmured.

Anna shook her head gently.
“She didn’t want that. She just wanted me to know where I came from.”

Silence stretched between them—not empty, but full.

Full of missed years.
Missed birthdays.
Missed everything.

Finally, Ethan looked at her again, his voice no longer uncertain.

“You’re not leaving tonight.”

Anna blinked, surprised.

“This is your home too,” he said, each word deliberate, grounding.
“And I intend to make up for every moment I lost
 if you’ll let me.”

May you like

For the first time since she entered that hall, Anna’s guarded expression softened.

Just a little.
