Chapter 3 â A New Beginning

Morning light poured gently into the estate, softening the sharp edges of a house that had always felt more like a fortress than a home.
Anna stood by the window, watching the gardens below. Everything felt unrealâtoo large, too quiet, too different from the life she had known.
Behind her, footsteps approached.
Ethan.
He paused for a moment before speaking, as if learning how to exist in this new reality.
âI had them prepare a room for you,â he said. âBut⊠you can change anything. It should feel like yours.â
Anna turned slightly, studying him. He looked different in daylight. Less intimidating. More⊠human.
âIâve never had a place that was mine,â she admitted.
âThen weâll start there.â
A small silence followed, but this one felt lighter.
Down the hall, Victoria stood watching from a distance. Her expression was no longer arrogant, nor shatteredâbut something quieter. Reflective.
She stepped forward slowly.
âAnna,â she said.
Both turned.
Victoria hesitatedâan unfamiliar act for herâbefore continuing.
âI owe you an apology.â
Anna blinked, caught off guard.
âI judged you without knowing the truth,â Victoria said, her voice steady but sincere. âAnd⊠I see now that youâre not here to take anything.â
Annaâs reply was simple.
âIâm just here to find where I belong.â
Victoria nodded, absorbing that.
Ethan watched the exchange carefully, something shifting inside him againânot tension this time, but hope.
Tentative. Fragile. Real.
Later that day, the three of them walked through the gardens together. Not as enemies. Not as strangers.
As something undefined⊠but possible.
Ethan glanced at Anna, a quiet resolve in his eyes.
âYour mother once told me,â he said softly, âthat family isnât about perfection. Itâs about choosing each other⊠even after everything.â
Anna met his gaze.
For the first time, she didnât look uncertain.
She looked⊠home.

And as the sunlight filtered through the trees, the past no longer felt like a weight.
It felt like the beginning of something new.
