Chapter 13: The Perimeter

The sanctuary shifted from a place of peace to a fortress in a matter of minutes.

Elena took charge of the residents. There were six other women staying with us, each battling their own demons. I watched with a surge of pride as my sister calmly, firmly guided them down the concealed concrete stairs into the reinforced basement, projecting an aura of absolute safety that masked the terror I knew she must be feeling.

Marcus and I moved through the lodge, securing the heavy steel shutters over the windows—a precaution I had insisted on during renovations, much to the contractor's confusion. We killed all the interior lights, plunging the massive log cabin into shadowy darkness, illuminated only by the faint gray morning light seeping through the cracks.

I stood in the kitchen, checking the magazine of my Glock 19. The metallic click of the bullets sliding into place was a harsh reminder that the past never truly dies; you just learn how to shoot back.

Marcus walked in, carrying a custom AR-15. He tossed me a spare magazine.

"I called Special Agent Davies," Marcus said, keeping his voice low. "He's scrambling a tactical team from Portland. But with the storm, they are at least forty-five minutes out."

"Silas won't need forty-five minutes," I replied, sliding the spare magazine into my pocket.

I moved to the security monitors. The cameras on the main road were still obscured by the heavy rain, but the thermal imaging picked up the heat signatures.

Three black SUVs were crawling up the winding mountain road, their headlights cut. They were moving with predatory stealth, stopping just out of sight of the main gate.

"Three vehicles. Probably a dozen men," I relayed to Marcus. "They think we're a soft target. A couple of social workers and a doctor."

"Let's disabuse them of that notion," Marcus said softly, racking the bolt of his rifle.

"Marcus," I said, catching his eye in the dim light. "They don't get inside. Whatever happens, they do not reach that basement."

"Over my dead body, Izzy."

"That's the plan," I agreed grimly.

I moved to the front hallway, pressing my back against the heavy oak door. Outside, the rain lashed against the wood, a chaotic drumbeat to the approaching storm. I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath, letting the fear wash over me and then pushing it away, leaving only the cold, sharp focus of survival.

A sudden, loud crack echoed through the valley as the heavy chain on the front gate was sheared off with bolt cutters.

The crunch of tactical boots on the gravel driveway followed. They were fanning out, moving to surround the lodge. Silas Vance’s men had come to reclaim their property and silence the woman who had dared to defy them.

I opened my eyes, the darkness of the hallway perfectly mirroring the ice in my chest. They had made a fatal miscalculation. They thought they were hunting prey in a sanctuary. They didn't realize they had just walked into a wolf's den.
