Chapter 6: The Black Ledger

The security hub was bathed in the pale blue glow of two dozen surveillance monitors. Below this room sat the vault. I didn't need to go down there; the main server terminal in front of me was the bridge to everything Richard kept hidden.
I sat in the leather chair, plugged Marcus’s encrypted burner drive into the terminal, and began typing furiously. My fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing the standard firewalls using the administrative backdoors I had secretly built into the system during the HVAC upgrade. Richard thought I was just picking out thermostats; he never realized I was securing a lifeline.
A folder labeled Archangel appeared on the screen.
My stomach churned as I opened it. It was a digital graveyard. Bank statements detailing offshore money laundering. Videos of politicians accepting bribes. Forged property deeds. And then, a subfolder marked Liabilities.
My breath caught. Inside were hundreds of files on the people Richard had broken. I clicked on a file named Elena Rossi.
Tears pricked my eyes as I scanned the documents. Surveillance photos of my sister, financial records of her boyfriend, and a sick, detailed schedule of her captivity in the Vanguard estate. It was undeniable, concrete proof of kidnapping, torture, and murder.
I initiated the download to my encrypted drive. The progress bar crawled: 20%... 45%... 70%...
Suddenly, the screen flashed crimson. The downloading paused.
A sharp hum echoed through the room as the intercom system flared to life.
"I have to admit, Isabella," Richard’s smooth, aristocratic voice crackled through the speakers, dripping with venom. "I underestimated you. Cutting your hair, playing the vigilante... it's a tragic look for you."
My blood ran cold. He had a silent alarm linked directly to his personal phone.
"You're done, Richard," I said, my voice remarkably steady, speaking into the room's microphone. "I have everything. The bribes, the laundering. The proof of what you did to my sister."
He laughed—a dry, soulless sound. "Proof? You think you can leave that building? My tactical team is two minutes away. There is only one exit from that room. You are trapped, my dear. Be a good girl, drop the drive, and perhaps I'll let you live in the basement with Elena."
90%... 98%... 100%.
The drive chimed. I snatched it from the terminal and shoved it deep into my pocket.
"I designed this system, Richard," I said, a grim smile touching my lips. "I know its flaws."
I didn't head for the door. Instead, I climbed onto the desk, reached up to the drop ceiling, and pushed aside a heavy acoustic tile. Above it was the primary return-air duct for the HVAC system—a shaft I specifically oversized to accommodate industrial cleaning equipment.

"Goodbye, Richard," I whispered.
I hauled myself up into the cold, dark metal shaft just as the heavy security door was breached below with an explosive crash. Flashlights cut through the room, but they were too late. The bird had flown the cage, and she had taken the master's secrets with her.
