CHAPTER 3: Rewriting the Vows

Gasps echoed across the ballroom.

Andrew’s head snapped up. “Clara—wait. You’re overreacting.”

“Am I?” she asked, almost gently.

He stepped toward her now, urgency replacing his earlier indifference. “My mom went too far, I get that—but we can fix this. We can replace the dress, we can—”

“You still don’t understand,” Clara said.

Her voice didn’t rise.

That made it worse.

“It was never about the dress.”

Andrew hesitated.

Clara took a step closer—not toward him, but toward clarity.

“It was about the fact that you watched someone humiliate me… and asked me to apologize.”

The words hit like a verdict.

Andrew opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

Across the room, Patricia finally found her voice again. “Andrew, don’t just stand there. Tell her she’s being ridiculous!”

Andrew didn’t move.

For the first time, uncertainty flickered across his face.

Clara noticed.

But it was too late.

She turned to the venue manager. “Please cancel the ceremony. Refund the guests' accommodations—on my account.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“And have security escort Mrs. Whitlock out,” Clara added, her eyes briefly meeting Patricia’s. “Gently. But firmly.”

Patricia gasped. “You can’t remove me from my son’s wedding!”

Clara held her gaze.

“I can remove anyone from my property.”

The words were final.

Security approached.

Patricia sputtered protests, her voice rising, cracking, unraveling—but no one stepped in to defend her this time.

Not even Andrew.

As she was escorted out, the ballroom felt… lighter.

Like a storm had passed.

Andrew looked back at Clara, his voice low now. “Is this really how it ends?”

Clara studied him.

For a moment—just a moment—there was something like sadness in her eyes.

“No,” she said softly. “This is just where I stop pretending.”

She reached up, gently removing the torn remains of her veil.

Petal by petal, illusion by illusion.

Then she turned away.

And walked down the aisle alone.
