CHAPTER 1: The Recording

The ballroom didnât move.
Not really.
Music still playedâsoft, distant, irrelevantâbut everything that mattered had collapsed into a single point: Evelyn.
She rose slowly, still holding Sophie.
No one rushed forward. No one offered help.
That was the first thing she noticed.
The second was the silence from Preston.
His breathing had steadied now, but his eyes flickeredânot with remorse, but with calculation.
Evelyn adjusted her grip on Sophie, pressing the child closer to her chest. Blood stained the white fabric between them, warm and real.
Then she looked up.
Not at Preston.
Not at Carolyn.
Not at Richard.
Above them.
The small red light blinked again.
Once.
Twice.
Recording.
Her voice, when she spoke, was calm. Too calm.
âCall an ambulance.â
No one moved.
Carolyn exhaled sharply, glancing around at the guests. âThis is getting out of control.â
Evelyn turned her head slightly, just enough to meet her eyes.
âNo,â she said quietly. âItâs about to become very controlled.â
Richardâs gaze sharpened.
He followed her line of sight.
Saw the camera.
And for the first timeâjust brieflyâhis expression shifted.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Evelyn saw it.
And she knew.
âYou taught me everything about evidence,â she said softly. âChain of custody. Intent. Context.â
She paused.
âYou should have remembered that.â
Preston scoffed, but there was hesitation now.
âItâs my hotel,â he said. âThat footage disappears.â
May you like
Evelyn almost smiled.
âTry.â
