CHAPTER 2: The Truth Beneath Marble

The hospital lights were unforgiving.

Sophie lay still, pale but stable, a thin oxygen tube resting beneath her nose.

Evelyn sat beside her, one hand gently wrapped around Sophie’s fingers.

Machines hummed softly.

Alive.

That was enough—for now.

A quiet knock.

Richard stepped in first.

Alone.

Of course.

He closed the door behind him with deliberate care.

“You’ve always been precise,” he said.

Evelyn didn’t look at him.

“You taught me to be.”

Silence stretched.

Then—

“The footage won’t hold the narrative you think it does,” Richard continued. “It shows Preston reacting. It doesn’t show what led to it.”

Evelyn finally turned her head.

Her eyes were clear now. Cold. Focused.

“It shows him assaulting a child.”

Richard didn’t flinch.

“It shows him responding to theft.”

Sophie stirred faintly.

Evelyn’s grip tightened.

“She didn’t take anything.”

Richard stepped closer, lowering his voice.

“The necklace was found in her hand.”

Evelyn studied him for a long moment.

Then—

“No,” she said. “It was placed there.”

A beat.

Richard’s expression stilled.

“By who?” he asked.

Evelyn’s gaze shifted—to the reflection in the dark hospital window.

Behind Richard.

A figure.

Carolyn.

Watching.

Evelyn’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“You tell me.”

The truth unraveled quietly.

Not in court.

Not yet.

But in details.

Staff testimony.

Timing inconsistencies.

A server who remembered Carolyn near the gift table.

A security guard who hesitated before confirming the footage had
 gaps.

And one crucial detail:

The camera angle.

It caught Carolyn’s hand.

May you like

Just barely.

Slipping something small into Sophie’s grasp—seconds before the accusation.
