Chapter 2: The Truth No One Said Out Loud

They were placed in a quiet consultation room.
Soft lighting. Closed door. No echoes.
Safer.
Emily sat curled into the corner of a chair, knees tucked to her chest. Rachel stayed close, careful not to overwhelm her.
A doctor and a social worker entered shortly after.
Rachel spoke first.
âI donât know the full story,â she said, voice tight but controlled. âBut I know what I saw. Those bruises arenât accidents.â
The social worker nodded slowly, her tone calm but serious. âEmily⊠can you tell us who brought you here?â
Emily stared at the floor.
Silence stretched.
Rachel didnât push. She just reached out, placing her hand lightly over Emilyâs.
After a moment, Emily whispered, barely audibleâ
âMy momâs boyfriend.â
The room seemed to freeze.
The doctor exchanged a glance with the social worker.
âDid he hurt you?â the social worker asked gently.
Emilyâs fingers tightened around Rachelâs sleeve. A tiny nod.
Rachel closed her eyes briefly, steadying the anger rising in her chest.
âOkay,â the social worker said softly. âYouâre safe here. No one is going to let him near you.â
Emily looked upâuncertain.
âReally?â

Rachel leaned in, her voice quiet but unwavering.
âI promise.â
And this timeâshe meant it in a way that went beyond words.
