Chapter 3: A Different Kind of Home

Hours later, everything had changed.

Reports were filed. Authorities contacted. The man from Room 312 was gone—escorted out under watchful eyes.

The hospital no longer felt cold.

Just quiet.

Emily sat beside Rachel again, but this time she wasn’t alone.

“Where will I go?” Emily asked, her voice small but steadier now.

The social worker knelt in front of her. “For now, somewhere safe. A temporary home. People who take care of kids just like you.”

Emily’s grip on Rachel tightened again. “Do I have to go alone?”

Rachel hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then—
“No,” she said.

Everyone in the room looked at her.

Rachel exhaled slowly. “I
I can foster her. At least until something permanent is figured out.”

The social worker studied her. “That’s a big decision.”

“I know,” Rachel said. “But she shouldn’t feel like she’s being sent away again.”

Emily’s eyes filled—not with fear this time, but something softer.

Hope.

That evening, as the sun dipped low outside the hospital windows, Rachel helped Emily into a borrowed hoodie.

Too big.

But warm.

They walked down the same corridor where it had all begun.

Past the metal chair.

Past Room 312.

This time, Emily didn’t look at the door.

She looked forward.

As they stepped outside, Emily slipped her hand into Rachel’s again.

“Is this
 home?” she asked quietly.

Rachel squeezed her hand gently.

“It’s the start of one.”

And for the first time—

May you like

Emily smiled.
