CHAPTER 1: THE FREEZE

The sound of tires screaming against wet pavement cut through the silence like a blade.
Brendanâs smile didnât just fadeâit fractured.
Cassidy didnât move.
Water still traced slow paths down her cheekbones, dripping from her jaw onto the glass table in soft, rhythmic taps. Her breathing was steady. Too steady.
Outside, doors slammed.
Multiple.
Heavy.
Dianeâs fingers tightened around her wine glass. Not enough to spillâbut enough to betray her.
âWhat did you do?â she asked, her voice suddenly thinner, like expensive silk stretched too far.
Cassidy blinked once. Calm. Present.
âNothing,â she said quietly.
Another beat.
Thenâ
The front door burst open.
Not violently. Not chaotic.
Controlled.
Three men in dark tailored suits entered with precise, almost surgical timing. Behind them, a woman in her 40s stepped forward, tablet in hand, eyes sharp and professional.
The air in the room shifted.
Authority had arrived.
âGood evening,â the woman said evenly. âIâm here on behalf of Halcyon Group Holdings.â
Brendan frowned. âIâve never heard ofââ
âYou wouldnât have,â she cut in smoothly. âUntil five seconds ago.â
She tapped her tablet.
Brendanâs phone buzzed.
Then buzzed again.
And again.
Jessicaâs smile vanished completely.
Diane slowly set her glass down.
The woman continued, her tone precise:
âAs of 8:42 PM, all assets tied to the Brennan family trust have been frozen pending investigation. Your accounts, properties, and corporate holdings are currently under review for fraud, embezzlement, and breach of fiduciary duty.â
Silence.
Thick. Suffocating.
Brendan let out a short, disbelieving laugh.
âThatâs ridiculous. You canât justââ
âWe already did.â
Cassidy finally stood.
Her soaked dress clung to her as she movedânot with weakness, but with quiet, undeniable control.
She looked at himânot with anger.
But with closure.
âI warned you,â she said softly.
May you like
And for the first time that nightâ
Brendan had no response.
