CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH THEY MISSED

The room no longer belonged to them.

That realization came slowly
 then all at once.

Jessica took a step back, her heels catching slightly on the edge of the Persian rug, now damp and darkened. Her voice trembled:

“Brendan
 what is happening?”

But Brendan wasn’t listening.

He was staring at Cassidy.

Really seeing her.

Not the version he dismissed. Not the woman he thought he had broken.

Something else.

Something he had completely misunderstood.

“You
you did this?” he asked, his voice low.

Cassidy tilted her head slightly.

“I finished it,” she corrected.

The woman with the tablet stepped forward again.

“For clarity,” she said, “Ms. Cassidy Hale is the primary controlling shareholder of Halcyon Group Holdings.”

Diane froze.

The name hit her like a delayed explosion.

“
Hale?” she whispered.

Recognition flickered too late.

Cassidy met her gaze.

“My father built it,” she said. “I rebuilt it.”

A quiet beat.

“And you tried to steal from it.”

Diane’s composure cracked—just slightly.

“That’s not—”

The tablet turned toward her.

Documents. Transfers. Signatures.

Evidence.

Precise. Clean. Undeniable.

Brendan ran a hand through his hair, pacing now.

“No
no, this doesn’t make sense. You never— You were—”

“Quiet?” Cassidy offered.

He stopped.

Her eyes didn’t leave his.

“You mistook silence for weakness,” she said.

A soft inhale.

“That was your first mistake.”

Outside, more vehicles arrived.

Not chaotic.

Organized.

Official.

The woman continued, her tone unchanged:

“Legal teams are en route. You’ll have the opportunity to cooperate.”

Jessica sank into a chair.

Diane said nothing.

For the first time in years—

They had lost control of the narrative.

Cassidy picked up her phone.

Water still clung to it—but it worked perfectly.

She turned to leave.

Brendan stepped forward instinctively.

“Cassidy—wait.”

She paused.

But didn’t turn around.

“What
what do you want?” he asked, quieter now.

That question lingered.

Hung in the air.

Cassidy finally glanced back over her shoulder.

Her voice was calm.

Clear.

May you like

Final.

“Peace.”
