Chapter 1: The Footage That Broke Him

Marcus Vale sat in the dim glow of his home office, the only light coming from the laptop screen. The house was quiet—Lily was asleep upstairs under the careful watch of the new night nanny he’d hired two days ago. Cassandra was out at one of her charity galas, smiling for cameras and playing the role of the perfect soon-to-be wife.

He clicked play for what felt like the hundredth time.

On the screen, little Lily—barely five years old—knelt on the cold tile floor in her pink pajamas. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she lowered her face toward the dog bowl. Cassandra’s voice, sharp and cruel, cut through the silence: “If you want to act like an animal, you’ll eat like one. Your father thinks you’re perfect? Let’s see how perfect you are when you’re begging.”

Lily’s small shoulders shook. The family dog, Max, whimpered nearby, confused. Cassandra stood over her, arms crossed, a twisted smile on her face—the same face that had once looked at Marcus with soft affection.

Marcus paused the video, his hands trembling. He had suspected something was wrong for months. Lily’s sudden silence, the way she flinched when Cassandra entered a room, the dark drawings of monsters with long red nails. But seeing it
this was something else. This was evil wearing the mask of love.

He didn’t scream. He didn’t cry. Instead, he backed up every file to three separate encrypted drives and made a copy on a hidden cloud account only he could access. Then he started planning.

Tomorrow night, their engagement party was scheduled at the country club. Friends, family, business partners—everyone who had welcomed Cassandra into their lives would be there. Marcus saved one particular clip: the worst one. Thirty-eight seconds that would end everything.

He closed the laptop and whispered into the dark, “I’m sorry, baby girl. Daddy’s got you now.”
