Chapter 2: The Video That Shattered Everything

The country club ballroom sparkled with crystal chandeliers and laughter. Cassandra moved through the crowd like she owned it, her emerald-green gown hugging her figure, diamond ring flashing every time she touched Marcus’s arm. “We’re so lucky,” she kept saying. “A second chance at a beautiful family.”

Marcus smiled tightly and said nothing.

When the toasts began, he stepped up to the microphone. The room quieted. Cassandra beamed at him, expecting the usual loving words.

“I want to thank all of you for being here tonight,” Marcus started, voice steady. “Especially Cassandra
for showing me exactly who she really is.”

He pulled out his phone, connected it to the projector, and hit play.

The footage filled the massive screen. Gasps rippled through the crowd. Cassandra’s face went pale as her own voice echoed: “Eat from the bowl like the little animal you are.” Lily’s sobs filled the room.

Chaos erupted.

“You monster!” Lily’s grandmother screamed.

Cassandra lunged for the phone, but Marcus held it high. “Don’t,” he said coldly. “It’s already sent to the police, my lawyer, and every major news outlet in the city. You’re done.”

Security escorted her out as she screamed threats and excuses—“It was just discipline! She’s lying!”—but no one believed her. Photos of the dog bowl incident were already circulating on phones. By the time the police arrived, Cassandra’s perfect life had crumbled into dust.

Marcus didn’t watch her leave. He went straight home, picked up his sleeping daughter, and held her tight. For the first time in months, Lily smiled in her sleep.
