## CHAPTER 1 â THE LINE SHE DRAWS

The kitchen went completely still.
Claire didnât raise her voice after the threat. She didnât need to.
Lindaâs smirk lingeredâbut just barely. Something in Claireâs tone had shifted. It wasnât anger. It was certainty.
Ethan finally looked up.
âClaireâŠâ he muttered, uneasy. âYouâre overreacting.â
Claire turned her head slowly toward him. Not sharply. Not dramatically. Just enough.
A pause.
âYouâve been standing there this entire time,â she said quietly. âWatching.â
Ethan swallowed. His fingers tightened around his loosened tie.
Linda scoffed again, tossing the torn blouse onto the marble counter.
âOh please. Donât act like a victim. You married into this family. Everything hereââ she gestured around the pristine kitchen, ââexists because of my son.â
Claire let that hang in the air.
Then she stepped forward.
One small step.
âI bought this house,â she said.
Silence.
Linda blinked.
Ethanâs face drained.
Claire lifted her phone slightlyânot threatening, not aggressiveâjust present.
âThe title. The accounts. The business funding.â A beat. âAll under my name.â
Linda laughed, but it came out thinner now.
âThatâs ridiculous.â
May you like
Claire tilted her head just slightly.
âIs it?â
