## CHAPTER 2 — TRUTH IN RECORD

The phone screen lit up between them.

Claire didn’t wave it around. She simply turned it—enough for them to see.

Bank statements.

Property records.

Signatures.

Dates.

Ethan stepped forward instinctively, his voice low.

“Claire
 why are you doing this?”

Her eyes moved to him. Slow. Measured.

“Because you never once asked who I was,” she said.

A long pause stretched between them.

Linda’s grip tightened unconsciously on the torn fabric still in her hand.

“You’re bluffing,” she snapped. “You think a few documents—”

Claire tapped the screen once.

A video began to play.

Linda’s own voice filled the room—from just minutes ago.

Clear.

Sharp.

Hostile.

Destroying property.

Insulting.

Unmistakable.

Linda froze.

Ethan closed his eyes briefly.

Claire’s voice stayed even.

“I didn’t want this,” she said. “I wanted respect. Basic respect.”

She lowered the phone slightly.

“But now I want something else.”
