Chapter 1 â The Name That Shattered the Room

The chandelier light trembled across the polished floor as silence swallowed the ballroom.
âSheâs my sister.â
The words didnât echoâthey settled. Heavy. Final.
Every pair of eyes shifted from the young man to the little girl. The elegant illusion of the engagement party cracked, not loudly, but with a quiet, irreversible fracture.
The woman in blue forced a smile that didnât reach her eyes. âThatâs absurd,â she said, her voice controlled, but thinner now. âYou donât even know her.â
The young man didnât look at her.
He remained kneeling, the silver crest resting in his palm like something sacred. His thumb traced the engraved symbolâone he had seen only once before, years ago, in a locked drawer his father never opened in front of anyone.
âI do,â he said softly.
The girl looked at him, uncertain, searching. âYou⊠you believe me?â
His eyes softened, but his jaw tightened. âWhatâs your name?â
âLily.â
The name hit him harder than the crest.
Across the room, an older guest whispered. Then another. The murmurs grewânot chaos, but recognition. Pieces of a long-buried truth assembling themselves.
The woman in blue stepped forward again, urgency replacing elegance. âThis is inappropriate. Remove them bothââ
âNo.â
The single word stopped everything.

He rose slowly, still holding Lilyâs hand now. âNo one touches her.â
And for the first time that night, the power in the room shifted.
