Chapter 2 — What Was Hidden

The study was dim, far from the glitter of the ballroom.

Dust floated in the lamplight as the young man unlocked a drawer he hadn’t opened since his father’s death. Lily stood beside him, small and still, her fingers wrapped around the edge of his sleeve.

Inside lay an old photograph.

A woman. Gentle eyes. The same pale hair as Lily’s. Standing beside a much younger version of his father.

He swallowed.

“That’s my mommy,” Lily whispered.

His breath caught. “She
 she left.”

Lily shook her head slowly. “She didn’t leave. She said she had to hide me. Said people wouldn’t let me stay.”

The pieces aligned with painful clarity.

Back in the ballroom, the woman in blue wasn’t just embarrassed—she had been afraid.

“She knew,” he said under his breath.

“Who?” Lily asked.

He closed the drawer carefully, his decision settling into place.

“My fiancĂ©e.”

When they returned, the party had fractured into clusters of speculation. Conversations stopped the moment they entered.

The woman in blue stood waiting.

“You went digging,” she said quietly.

“You lied,” he replied.

Her composure cracked—not into anger, but desperation. “You don’t understand what this does. Your family, your reputation—everything—”

“My family,” he interrupted, “is standing right next to me.”

Silence again.

But this time, it wasn’t fragile.

It was choosing a side.
