CHAPTER ONE: THE MAN THEY UNDERESTIMATED

The room exploded into chaos.
Mauricio shot to his feet, his chair crashing behind him.
“This is ridiculous!” he barked. “She’s a waitress! A nobody!”
Valeria flinched—but didn’t speak.
Attorney Salinas didn’t even blink.
“Mr. Garza anticipated resistance,” he said calmly. “Which is why every document has been verified, witnessed, and legally sealed.”
Mauricio’s wife leaned forward, her voice sharp as glass.
“You expect us to believe my father-in-law just handed over millions to a girl who served him tea?”
Valeria finally found her voice.
“I didn’t know who he was,” she said quietly. “He was just… a man who came in every day.”
“And that,” the lawyer replied, “is exactly why you’re sitting in that chair.”
Silence fell again.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
The director cleared his throat.
“There’s more,” he said cautiously.
Salinas nodded and opened a second document.
“Don Alejandro also left a letter,” he said. “To be read only in the presence of his family… and Miss Ortiz.”
Mauricio crossed his arms.
“Read it,” he snapped.
Salinas unfolded the letter slowly.
“My son,” he began, reading aloud, “you built your life believing money earns loyalty. You were wrong.”
Mauricio’s jaw tightened.
“I tested the world without my name, without my power,” the letter continued. “And I found only one person who treated me like a human being.”
Valeria’s hands trembled.
“She gave me something you never did—respect without conditions.”
The room felt smaller.
Colder.
“To you, Mauricio, I leave the empire you always wanted,” Salinas read. “But understand this: ownership without humanity is emptiness.”
Mauricio laughed bitterly.
“Spare me the lecture,” he said. “I still have the company.”
May you like
Salinas looked up.
“Do you?”
