Chapter 2: The Truth Unveiled

“Long night?” Daniel asked.
She set her bag down carefully.
“Just work,” she replied, avoiding his eyes.
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Open it.”
Her heart skipped.
“What?”
“Your bag.”
A beat of silence.
Then she laughed lightly. “Daniel, what is this?”
But he didn’t move.
Didn’t blink.
“Open it.”
This time, his voice carried weight.
Authority.
Finality.
Her fingers trembled just slightly as she reached for the zipper.
Inside—
Stacks of cash.
Jewelry.
The watches.
All exposed under the warm light of the living room.
The lie couldn’t survive anymore.
She inhaled sharply. “I can explain—”
“Explain what?” Daniel cut in.
“That you robbed your own husband?”
Tears welled in her eyes—but he didn’t soften.
Not yet.
“It’s not what you think,” she whispered.
“Then tell me what it is.”
Her voice broke.
“I thought you were leaving me.”
The words hung in the air.
Daniel frowned slightly.
“What?”
“I saw the documents… the financial transfers… the meetings with lawyers…”
Her breathing became uneven.
“I thought you were preparing to cut me out. To leave me with nothing.”
Daniel stared at her.
Then slowly…
He exhaled.
“I was preparing a trust.”
She froze.
“For you,” he continued. “For us.”
Silence crashed into the room.
“I wanted to surprise you. Secure everything in your name in case anything ever happened to me.”
Her knees weakened.
“I thought…” she whispered.
“I know what you thought,” he said quietly.
“And instead of asking me… you chose to steal.”
Tears fell freely now.
“I was scared.”
Daniel looked at her for a long moment.
Then finally said—
“So was I.”
Not of losing money.
But of losing her.
May you like
And now—
He already had.
