CHAPTER 1: The Cut That Saved Him

“Do it now.”
The doctor’s voice cut through the tension like a blade. Nurses rushed forward, carefully but urgently positioning David’s leg. His sobs had turned hoarse, his small hands clutching his father’s sleeve like it was the only thing keeping him grounded.
“Buddy, it’s okay… it’s okay…” his father whispered, though his own voice trembled.
The cast saw whirred to life.
David screamed—not in fear this time, but in raw, unbearable pain.
The room froze for a split second.
“That’s not normal,” the doctor snapped. “Faster!”
Within seconds, the cast split open.
And then—
Silence.
A nurse gasped.
Beneath the padding, David’s leg was swollen far beyond what a simple fracture should look like. The skin was tight, pale, and stretched to a dangerous point.
“Compartment syndrome,” the doctor said sharply. “We’re losing circulation. If we hadn’t opened this—”
She didn’t finish.
David’s father went pale. “What… what does that mean?”
“It means,” she said, locking eyes with him, “your son was minutes away from permanent damage… or worse.”
The mother covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face.
David’s cries softened into weak whimpers as the pressure was relieved.
For the first time since it began, he looked… calmer.
And suddenly, everyone understood—

He hadn’t been overreacting.
He had been trying to survive.
