Chapter 1: The Word in the Dark

Elena froze when the woman’s fingers tightened around her apron.

“Mother…”

The word barely escaped the woman’s cracked lips, but it echoed like thunder in Elena’s mind.

“That’s not possible,” Elena whispered, shaking her head. “Mr. Anderson’s mother… she’s dead.”

The woman’s hollow eyes filled with desperate tears. “He tells everyone that… so no one looks for me.”

A chill spread through Elena’s body.

Behind her, the basement creaked.

She pulled back instinctively, but the woman clung to her, trembling. “Please… don’t leave me here again.”

Footsteps echoed faintly from above.

Someone was coming.

Elena made a choice she couldn’t undo.
