ENERGY PUSH: Trump Issues Emergency Waiver to Keep Oil Flowing Amid Hormuz Crisis

In response to a rapidly escalating global energy crisis, President Donald Trump has taken decisive action by issuing a temporary waiver of the Jones Act—aimed at keeping oil flowing into the United States and easing rising gas prices.

The move comes as the ongoing conflict with Iran has led to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most critical oil transit routes in the world. The strait typically carries nearly 20% of global oil supply, making any disruption a major shock to international markets.

A Crisis in Global Energy Supply

Tensions in the region have sharply reduced tanker traffic, with many ships avoiding the strait due to safety concerns and attacks. As a result, global oil prices have surged, and fuel costs in the United States have climbed significantly.

With supply chains under pressure, the Trump administration moved quickly to prevent further disruption at home.

What the Waiver Means

The Jones Act, a century-old U.S. shipping law, normally requires that goods transported between American ports be carried on U.S.-built and operated vessels. By temporarily waiving these restrictions, the administration is allowing foreign-flagged ships to transport oil, gas, and other essential resources within the U.S.

Officials say this step is designed to expand shipping capacity, reduce bottlenecks, and ensure that energy supplies can reach key regions more efficiently.

Aimed at Lowering Gas Prices

The decision is part of a broader strategy to ease pressure on American consumers, as gas prices have risen in response to the global supply shock. The administration hopes that increasing the flow of oil into domestic markets will help stabilize prices in the short term.
