Chapter 1: The Golden Hour**

The late afternoon sun cast long, dramatic shadows across the porch of Peter’s suburban home. It was a quiet Tuesday, the kind of day meant for simple chores. Peter knelt on the white wooden steps, his trusty black toolbox open beside him. He was focused, humming quietly as he aligned a screw on the loose porch railing, his red-and-black plaid flannel catching the autumn breeze.
Then, a weak, trembling voice shattered the peace.
"Uncle Peter."
Peter turned, and the metal screwdriver slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the toolbox. His heart plummeted. Standing at the edge of the lawn was his nephew, Drew. The boy was breathing in ragged, exhausted gasps. His face was smudged with dirt and sweat, his red-and-white baseball shirt stained. Worst of all, his left knee was a gruesome mess of raw, freshly bleeding skin.
But Drew wasn’t alone. Clinging to his back, carried piggyback by a boy barely big enough to support her, was his younger sister, Lily. She wore a light pink shirt, her blonde hair matted. She wasn't crying. Instead, her eyes held a hollow, traumatized emptiness that chilled Peter to the bone.
"Drew! God, what happened?" Peter exclaimed, already moving.
Tears streamed down Drew's dirt-streaked cheeks. He pushed himself to his physical limit just to take one more step. "She locked us downstairs again," the boy sobbed in a panicked, broken voice.
Peter didn't hesitate. He scrambled down the steps and grabbed them both, taking Lily's weight and pulling Drew into a fierce, protective embrace on the bottom step. Lily rested her head against Peter’s shoulder, staring blankly into the distance.
"I've got you," Peter whispered fiercely, wrapping his strong arms around them.
Drew buried his face in Peter’s shoulder, weakly starting to say, "Lily was hungry..."

As Peter held the trembling children, a dark shift overtook him. The initial shock and fear melted away. His brow furrows, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached, and his eyes narrowed. A dark, intense glare of pure, vengeful fury settled on his features. Whoever had done this to them was going to pay.
