Chapter 1: The Illusion of Victory

The sharp sound of the slap echoed through the opulent parlor, momentarily drowning out the soft hum of the central air.

Eleanor stumbled backward, the ornate golden throne catching her fall. A sharp, metallic taste blossomed on her lower lip. Standing over her was Julian, his impeccably tailored black suit perfectly matching the darkness of his intentions. His face was twisted in a cruel, triumphant sneer. Beside him clung Chloe, draped in a crimson slip dress with a daring thigh-high slit, her eyes gleaming with manufactured pity and underlying greed.

"You're officially out of my life," Julian spat, casually adjusting the heavy gold watch on his wrist. "And out of this company. The board is voting right now. I’ve rallied enough of the shareholders to oust you, Eleanor. Pack your things."

Eleanor didn't scream. She didn't cry. The emotional sting of her husband's betrayal had faded months ago, on the rainy Tuesday she first uncovered his embezzlement and his sordid affair with Chloe. What Julian didn't know was that while he was busy playing corporate conqueror and sneaking around in cheap hotel rooms, Eleanor had been quietly playing grandmaster chess.

She took a slow, deep breath, her tailored white pantsuit remaining crisp and pristine despite her fall. She rested her hands on the carved armrests of the chair, letting him enjoy his fleeting illusion of victory.

"You think a hostile takeover is that simple, Julian?" she asked, her voice dangerously calm.

"It is when your ex-wife is too blind to see the writing on the wall," he mocked, wrapping a possessive arm around Chloe's waist. "This house, the accounts, Vance Enterprises... it's all mine now. You are history."
