Chapter 1 - The Storm Inside

The house on Elm Street looked like any other in the quiet suburban neighborhood—immaculately manicured lawn, pristine white columns, and a welcoming front porch. But behind the heavy oak door, the illusion of a perfect life had shattered entirely.

Rachel backed away slowly, her hand instinctively resting on the heavy curve of her pregnant stomach. Her breath came in shallow, jagged gasps. Beside her, seven-year-old Lily clung to the torn fabric of Rachel’s white maternity dress, her small face pale with terror.

Ethan paced the living room like a caged animal. The gray suit he wore, usually a symbol of his polished corporate demeanor, was now rumpled and discarded as a mere afterthought. His eyes were dark, erratic, and utterly devoid of the man Rachel had once thought she married.

"You think you can just walk away?" Ethan’s voice was a low, dangerous hiss that quickly escalated into a deafening roar. He threw his arms out wildly, knocking a framed photograph off the console table. The glass shattered against the hardwood floor.

Rachel didn't answer. She couldn't afford to agitate him further. Instead, her right hand slipped silently into the deep pocket of her cardigan. Her fingers brushed against cold, hard plastic. It was a small, black emergency SOS tracker her father had given her months ago, when he first noticed the subtle bruises she had tried so desperately to conceal.

“If you are ever in a corner, Rachel,” her father had told her, placing the device in her palm. “You pull this red tab. You don't hesitate. I will be there.”

With trembling fingers, Rachel found the small red tab. She closed her eyes for a fraction of a second and pulled it hard. A tiny, silent vibration confirmed the signal was sent.

Ethan caught the subtle movement of her arm. His gaze snapped to her, his posture rigid with fury. He stepped forward, closing the distance between them in two massive strides. Rachel shoved Lily gently behind her back, bracing herself for the impact.

"You think someone is coming for you?" Ethan mocked, a cruel, breathless laugh escaping his lips. He raised his hand, pointing a shaking finger at her face. "Your father cannot save you!"
