CHAPTER 1: THE LOCKED ROOM

Mariana didn’t move.
The soft click of the lock echoed through her chest like a warning shot. For a moment, she stood frozen in the hallway, staring at the closed door as if it might suddenly open again.
It didn’t.
Inside, Doña Consuelo was alone.
Trapped.
Mariana’s heart pounded. Every instinct told her to walk away—to stay invisible, to keep her job, to pretend she hadn’t seen anything.
But then she remembered the hidden bread.
The trembling hands.
The whispered plea: “Don’t leave me alone with her.”
That night, Mariana made a decision that would change everything.
She waited until Camila left for her evening yoga class. The moment the front gate shut, Mariana moved quickly. She found the spare keys hanging in the pantry—a small ring labeled for storage rooms.
But one key stood out.
Unlabeled.
Cold.
Heavy.
Her hands shook as she tried it in Doña Consuelo’s door.
Click.
The door opened slowly.
Inside, the air was stale, suffocating. Curtains drawn. Lights off.
And in the corner—
Doña Consuelo sat curled in the velvet chair, her eyes wide with fear.
“Mariana…” she whispered, as if she wasn’t sure this was real.
“I’m here,” Mariana said, stepping inside. “You’re not alone anymore.”
May you like
And for the first time since she arrived in that house…
Mariana stopped being invisible.
