CHAPTER 5: WHAT LOVE REALLY MEANS

Our daughter was born on a quiet morning in early spring.
No chaos.
No fear.
Just soft light through the hospital window and Megan’s hand gripping mine as new life filled the room.
When I held my baby for the first time, something inside me settled.
A promise.
Unspoken, but unbreakable.
“I will never let anyone hurt you,” I whispered.
Megan smiled through tears.
Weeks later, sitting in our apartment—now filled with warmth again—I watched Megan laugh for the first time in months.
Real laughter.
Not forced. Not fragile.
Alive.
“I was so scared,” she admitted quietly. “Not of her… but of losing you.”
I shook my head.
“You never lost me,” I said.
But then I corrected myself.
“I just didn’t see clearly… until I almost lost everything.”
She leaned into me, our daughter asleep between us.
And for the first time, I understood something my mother never did.
Love isn’t control.
It isn’t fear.
It isn’t obedience.
Love is protection.
Love is listening.
Love is choosing someone… even when it’s hard.
Especially when it’s hard.

And this time—
I chose right.
