Chapter 4: What Was Broken

The hospital room was quiet.
Sophie slept peacefully.
A small bandage wrapped around her head.
Her tiny hand still held mine.
A nurse smiled gently. “She’s very brave.”
“Yes,” I whispered.
“She always has been.”
The door opened slowly.
I didn’t need to look.
I knew who it was.
My mother.
“I came to see her.”
“No.”
The word was soft.
But final.
She stepped closer. “Evelyn, please—”
“No.”
I turned this time.
And she flinched.
Because I wasn’t her daughter anymore.
Not the one who begged.
Not the one who stayed silent.
“You don’t get to stand beside her now,” I said quietly.
“You don’t get to pretend this never happened.”
Tears filled her eyes.
But they didn’t move me.
“I protected him,” she whispered.
“I thought I was protecting the family.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“You were protecting a lie.”
She broke then.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just… collapsed inward.
Like something finally gave way.
And I realized—
