CHAPTER 13: MY MOTHER’S LAST SECRET

My mother sat against the wall with a paramedic pressing cloth to her shoulder.

Her name remained on every screen.

MERIDIAN EXECUTIVE CONTROLLER: HELENA VALE.

Arthur looked more shocked than anyone.

“What did you do?” he asked.

Helena stared at the record.

“I took control of the network three years ago.”

Mercer stepped closer.

“You told us you were dismantling it.”

“I was.”

“By becoming its controller?”

“Someone had to approve every transaction. Once I gained access, I could trace the buyers, sellers and political intermediaries.”

Rebecca examined the account.

“She authorized more than six hundred transfers.”

“Transfers I redirected into monitored accounts.”

“Some of those funds disappeared.”

My mother looked toward Arthur.

“Because Arthur found the accounts.”

My father’s expression changed.

“You used Vale subsidiaries.”

“They were already connected to Meridian.”

“You placed my company at the center of a federal seizure.”

“You placed it there twenty-three years earlier.”

Gideon laughed from where Elias held him.

“The Vale family finally turns on itself.”

I approached my mother.

“Did you order Rebecca to stage the attack?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know explosives were beneath the museum?”

“No.”

“Did you know Grant would be here?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know he was my brother?”

Her eyes filled with pain.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt more than any lie that night.

“You watched him attack me.”

“I was already Gideon’s prisoner.”

“You knew what he had become long before tonight.”

“I hoped Arthur would remove him from Holloway control.”

Arthur looked away.

My mother continued.

“When Arthur refused, I tried to reach Grant myself. Gideon intercepted the message.”

Grant stood near the vault, one arm hanging painfully at his side.

“What message?”

Helena’s voice softened.

“The pendant Rebecca carried contained a recording for you.”

Rebecca removed the silver pendant from her pocket.

She handed it to Grant.

He opened the small compartment.

A memory chip rested inside.

“I wanted to tell you the truth before the auction,” Helena said. “Rebecca never had the opportunity.”

Grant closed his fist around the pendant.

“You left me with Gideon.”

“I was hunted.”

“You found Mara.”

“I watched Mara from a distance.”

“You could have watched me too.”

“I did.”

His face hardened.

“That is worse.”

Helena closed her eyes.

He was right.

Love observed from a distance did not protect a child trapped inside cruelty.

Arthur stepped toward the server.

“We can debate guilt after the evidence is secured.”

I turned on him.

“There will be no private negotiation.”

“Mara, thousands of innocent employees depend on Vale Holdings.”

“Then they will be protected during the investigation.”

“You cannot dismantle a global company overnight.”

“I can surrender its Meridian divisions.”

His face became cold.

“You do not control the board.”

“I control the evidence that can remove it.”

For the first time, my father looked at me as an opponent.

Not a daughter.

Not a tool.

An equal threat.

Rebecca searched the controller account.

“There is a final command linked to Helena’s access.”

“What command?” Mercer asked.

Rebecca’s face changed.

“Total deletion.”

Gideon stopped smiling.

My mother looked toward the server.

“I created it in case the archive was captured.”

“You can erase everything?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Then disable it.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“The deletion key is connected to my heartbeat monitor.”

The room went silent.

If Helena’s heart stopped, the Meridian archive would erase itself.

Gideon had known.

That was why he kept her alive.

That was why he brought her into the museum.

Not merely as leverage.

As a living failsafe.

Mercer looked at the paramedic.

“Can you remove the monitor?”

“It may trigger the system.”

Rebecca studied the code.

“We need Helena’s controller password.”

My mother shook her head.

“The password was divided into four parts.”

“Who has them?”

“Arthur. Gideon. Samuel. And me.”

Three founders and the woman who took control from them.

Samuel remained near the damaged wall.

Gideon was restrained.

Arthur stood beside the vault.

My mother looked at each of them.

“All four codes must be entered simultaneously.”

Mercer moved the men toward the server.

Gideon refused.

“You cannot force me.”

Grant stepped in front of him.

“If you do not enter the code, every record of your empire disappears.”

“Exactly.”

“So does every account.”

Gideon’s expression shifted.

The archive did not only contain evidence.

It contained access to billions of dollars.

Grant had found the one thing Gideon valued more than freedom.

His wealth.

Arthur entered his code first.

Samuel followed.

My mother typed the third.

Gideon stared at the screen.

Grant leaned close.

“Save the money, Father.”

Gideon entered his code.

CONTROLLER FAILSAFE DISABLED.

The archive was secure.

Federal agents began restraining Samuel and Gideon.

Arthur offered his hands without resistance.

Before Mercer could cuff him, every screen flashed red.

Rebecca looked at the server.

“That wasn’t the deletion system.”

A new message appeared.

SECONDARY AUCTION PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.

“What is that?” I asked.

Samuel’s face went white.

“The museum was never the only Meridian site.”

A map appeared.

New York.

London.

Paris.

Geneva.

Singapore.

Seven locations began flashing.

Gideon smiled.

May you like

“You exposed one room.”

“Tonight, the other six are being emptied.”
