CHAPTER 14: THE LAST AUCTION

Rebecca enlarged the map.

Six Meridian storage sites were transmitting destruction alerts.

Documents were being burned.

Servers were being wiped.

Stolen collections were being moved.

The Hawthorne Museum had never been the heart of the network.

It was the command center.

When our archive became public, Meridian’s international partners activated their escape plan.

Mercer spoke into his radio.

“Send the locations to Interpol and every available federal liaison.”

“The coordinates are encrypted,” Rebecca said.

“Can the ledger decode them?”

“Not without the executive controller account.”

Everyone looked at my mother.

Helena struggled to stand.

The paramedic tried to stop her.

“If those sites are emptied, thousands of objects disappear forever.”

“You are injured,” I said.

“I have lived eleven years for this moment.”

She moved toward the server.

Arthur stepped beside her.

“I know the commercial route codes.”

Gideon laughed from his restraints.

“You think governments will cooperate? Half the names in that ledger belong to them.”

“Then we do not send the evidence only to governments,” I said.

I turned toward the museum’s press system.

“We send it to everyone.”

Rebecca understood.

“Public mirrors.”

“News organizations. Universities. Cultural ministries. Independent investigators.”

Mercer nodded.

“Once the files are distributed across enough servers, no government can quietly erase them.”

Arthur looked at me.

“You will expose confidential intelligence operations.”

“Then intelligence agencies should not have financed trafficking.”

“You could destabilize governments.”

“Meridian already did.”

My father had spent his life containing damage through secrecy.

I would end it through exposure.

Rebecca divided the archive into encrypted packages.

Helena entered the controller route codes.

Arthur decrypted the financial structure.

Grant placed the Hawthorne signature on the final authorization panel.

Mercer added Holloway authentication.

I pressed my hand against Vale.

The six locations unlocked.

Files began transferring.

Twenty percent.

Thirty-six percent.

Forty-eight percent.

An alarm sounded above us.

Elias checked the museum cameras.

“Helicopter approaching the roof.”

Gideon smiled.

“My extraction team.”

“You are restrained,” Mercer said.

“Not for long.”

The helicopter hovered above the cracked glass ceiling.

A cable dropped through the damaged section.

Armed contractors descended into the main gallery.

Guests scattered.

Elias’s remaining officers exchanged fire with the intruders.

“Keep the upload moving!” I shouted.

Mercer ran toward the staircase.

Grant followed him.

“You’re injured,” I said.

“This is still my family’s mess.”

He disappeared upstairs.

The transfer reached sixty-two percent.

The building shook as the helicopter pulled against the roof structure.

They were not only extracting Gideon.

They were trying to tear open the museum.

Arthur watched the structural display.

“The glass ceiling will collapse.”

“How long?”

“Three minutes.”

Rebecca continued working.

“Upload needs four.”

My mother looked at the emergency containment controls.

“The gallery shutters can support the ceiling.”

“They are sealing the exits,” I said.

“Everyone will be trapped again.”

“Only until the upload completes.”

We had begun the night by locking powerful people inside.

Now we had to lock ourselves inside to survive.

I activated the structural shutters.

Steel panels moved across the ceiling.

The helicopter cable caught between them.

The aircraft shifted violently.

Outside, reporters fled as debris struck the museum steps.

The upload reached seventy-five percent.

Gunfire stopped upstairs.

Then Grant’s voice came through the radio.

“Gideon is loose.”

Elias answered.

“How?”

“Calvin Rusk released him.”

I had forgotten Grant’s attorney during the chaos.

Calvin had remained in the gallery, appearing harmless while every other powerful figure exposed themselves.

He was not a fourth heir.

He was Meridian’s emergency executor.

The man responsible for eliminating evidence when founders failed.

The laboratory door opened.

Calvin entered with Gideon beside him.

Calvin held a gun against Grant’s back.

Mercer and Elias followed several feet behind, unable to fire.

Gideon looked at the upload screen.

Eighty-one percent.

“Stop it,” he ordered.

“No,” I said.

Calvin pressed the weapon into Grant.

“Your brother will die.”

Grant looked at me.

He was pale from blood loss, but his voice remained steady.

“Do not stop.”

Gideon struck him.

“You were always ungrateful.”

“You were never my father.”

Gideon looked toward Arthur.

“And you were never his.”

Arthur did not respond.

Calvin moved Grant closer to the server.

“Cancel the transmission.”

Eighty-seven percent.

My mother whispered to Rebecca.

Rebecca’s fingers moved beneath the console.

Gideon noticed.

He raised his weapon toward Helena.

Arthur stepped between them.

The gun fired.

Arthur collapsed.

For one second, no one moved.

Then Grant drove his shoulder into Calvin.

Mercer fired.

Calvin’s weapon fell.

Elias tackled Gideon against the vault.

Rebecca pressed the final transmission command.

Ninety-four percent.

Arthur lay on the floor with blood spreading across his shirt.

I knelt beside him.

His eyes found mine.

“Did it finish?”

“Ninety-six.”

He struggled to breathe.

“I thought controlling the truth would protect you.”

“It didn’t.”

“I know.”

Ninety-eight percent.

Gideon broke free from Elias and lunged toward the server.

Grant caught him.

The two men crashed against the glass authentication panels.

One hundred percent.

ARCHIVE DISTRIBUTED.

The screens across the museum displayed the same message.

MERIDIAN NETWORK PUBLICLY RELEASED.

Gideon stopped fighting.

Sirens surrounded the building.

Helicopters from federal agencies and news organizations filled the sky.

Around the world, officers entered private warehouses, bank offices, museums and government buildings.

Meridian’s last auction had ended.
