Chapter 3: The Mother’s Collapse

By dawn, Miriam Whitmore was hosting breakfast.

Of course she was.

Crisis never disrupted her schedule—only appearances mattered.

Crystal glasses.

Pressed linen.

Perfect control.

Until Donovan walked in.

Uninvited.

Unsmiling.

“I believe you’re expecting news,” he said.

Miriam didn’t flinch.

“I don’t tolerate theatrics before coffee.”

Donovan placed a tablet on the table.

Pressed play.

Nathan’s voice filled the room.

Clear.

Undeniable.

“…she walks inside, you shut the door…”

“…by morning, it’s an accident…”

Miriam’s fingers tightened around her teacup.

Just slightly.

But enough.

For the first time—

She looked uncertain.

“You recorded this illegally,” she said coldly.

Donovan smiled faintly.

“No. Evelyn authorized every device placed inside property she owns.”

A pause.

Then the final blow.

“And the police are already on their way.”

For the first time in decades—

Miriam Whitmore had no move left to make.
