CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH BEHIND THE MAN

The medical team arrived faster than the girl thought possible.
Within minutes, the quiet, frozen room transformed into controlled urgency—soft voices, careful hands, blankets, equipment.
The twins were gently lifted from the plastic bin.
The sick woman was placed onto a stretcher.
And the girl—
She didn’t let go of the envelope.
Not even when one of the medics knelt beside her.
“You’re safe now,” the woman said gently.
Safe.
The word felt foreign.
Across the room, the man stood still, watching everything unfold. His expression remained composed—but his eyes… they had changed.
The girl noticed.
“Why?” she asked suddenly.
He looked at her.
For a moment, he didn’t answer.
Then he walked closer, crouching down to her level.
Years of authority seemed to fall away in that single motion.
“Because once,” he said quietly, “someone did the same for me.”
The girl frowned slightly.
“I was younger than you,” he continued. “Cold. Hungry. Invisible.”
His jaw tightened, just barely.
“And one person decided I wasn’t.”
Silence stretched between them.
The girl looked down at the envelope again.
Then back at him.
“…Are we going to die?” she asked.
For the first time—
The man allowed himself a small, genuine smile.

“No,” he said.
“Not anymore.”
