CHAPTER 3: A WARM PLACE

The building was warm.

That was the first thing the girl noticed.

Not just warmer than the freezing room—

But truly warm.

Soft light filled the hallways. Clean sheets. Real food. Quiet voices that didn’t shout or threaten.

The twins were sleeping peacefully in a proper crib.

The woman—her mother—was breathing steadily, color slowly returning to her face.

And the girl…

She sat by the window, holding the empty envelope.

Not because she needed what was inside anymore—

But because it reminded her of the moment everything changed.

Footsteps approached behind her.

She didn’t turn.

“I wasn’t sure you’d stay,” the man said.

“I wasn’t sure you were real,” she replied.

A small pause.

Then—

“…What happens now?” she asked.

The man stood beside her, looking out at the falling snow beyond the glass.

“Now,” he said, “you get a chance.”

She looked up at him.

“A chance for what?”

He glanced down, softer now than ever before.

“To live,” he answered.

The girl nodded slowly.

For the first time in days—

She wasn’t afraid of tomorrow.

Outside, the snow kept falling.

But inside—

It was warm.

May you like

And for the first time—

Hope didn’t feel like a lie.
