Chapter 3: The Reckoning

A week later, Nathan stood outside iron gates he had never seen before.
Massive. Imposing. Untouchable.
Security cameras followed his every movement.
“Please,” he told the guard. “Just tell her I’m here.”
“No appointment, no entry,” the guard replied flatly.
“Nathan Brooks,” he insisted. “She knows me.”
The guard didn’t even blink.
“She does,” he said. “That’s why you’re not on the list.”
The words hit harder than any insult.
Nathan swallowed, his voice breaking for the first time.
“I just… I need to talk to her.”
Behind the gates, a sleek black car pulled into the driveway.
Nathan stepped forward instinctively.
The car stopped.
The door opened.
And she stepped out.
No wedding dress.
No softness.
No hesitation.
Just power.
Ms. Sterling.
She didn’t walk toward him.
She didn’t speak.
She simply stood there, watching him the way one observes something… finished.
Nathan moved closer to the gate.
“Please,” he said. “I made a mistake.”
Her expression didn’t change.
“You made a choice,” she corrected calmly.
“I’ll fix it,” he rushed. “I’ll end things with Camille—I’ll—”
“You already ended things,” she said.
He froze.
“With me.”
Silence stretched between them.
“I didn’t know,” he said weakly. “About the company… about you…”
“That’s the point,” she replied.
Her voice wasn’t angry.
It was worse.
It was indifferent.
“You never asked.”
Nathan gripped the bars of the gate.
“I can change.”
She studied him for a moment.
Then gave a small, almost distant smile.
“I believe you,” she said.
Hope flickered in his eyes—
And died instantly with her next words.
“But I don’t need you to.”
She turned away.
Just like he had.
The symmetry was cruel.
Perfect.
Final.
As she walked back toward the house, Nathan realized something that no loss of money, power, or status had made him feel before.
Regret.
Real, irreversible regret.

And this time…
There was no one left to fix it for him.
