Chapter 5 - The Tracker.

The tracker transformed Whitmore House from a refuge into a marked location.
Security moved Rachel and Lily to a quiet guest property while technicians examined the device.
Its purchase record led to a prepaid card, but the activation account used an email address containing Daniel's childhood nickname.
Maya called the discovery useful.
Rachel called it terrifying.
"He knew exactly where Lily was," she said.
"Now we know how," Maya replied.
"Knowing is how we take away his advantage."
The temporary custody hearing was scheduled for the next morning.
Daniel arrived at court in a navy suit with a carefully bruised expression of concern.
He told reporters outside that he only wanted his daughter safe.
Rachel entered through a private side door and refused to watch the broadcast.
Inside, Daniel's attorney described Elias's arrival as an invasion.
Maya presented the emergency call log, the original camera copy, photographs of the broken kitchen items, and the tracker.
Daniel claimed the video lacked context.
"What context makes striking your spouse acceptable?" the judge asked.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I lost control for one second. I regret it deeply."
His apology sounded polished because it had been rehearsed.
Then he added the line that made Rachel's hands go cold.
"My wife has been under unusual pressure from her father."
He produced emails that appeared to show Elias directing Rachel to open hidden accounts and gather information about Grayhaven.
Rachel had never seen them.
Maya requested time to examine the metadata.
The judge granted Rachel temporary physical custody, ordered supervised contact for Daniel, and prohibited either side from discussing the case publicly.
It was protection, but it was not victory.
Outside the courtroom, Daniel passed Rachel without looking at her.
"You always needed your father to fight for you," he murmured.
"No," Rachel answered.
"I needed time to learn how to fight for myself."
That afternoon, a forensic analyst confirmed the emails had been inserted into Rachel's account through a synchronized home computer.
The machine was in Daniel's study.
One message, however, had been sent from Whitmore Logistics headquarters.
Elias read the access log twice.
"Someone inside my company helped him."
The user credentials belonged to Martin Vale, Elias's chief financial officer and closest adviser for nineteen years.
Martin had been present at Rachel's wedding.
He had held Lily at her baptism.
He had also overseen the vendor review that rejected Grayhaven.
Elias called him and placed the phone on speaker.
"Martin, I need you at the office."
"Of course. Is this about Daniel?"
The question came too quickly.
Elias's face hardened.
"Why would you think that?"
Martin corrected himself, but the damage was done.
They arranged a meeting for six.
At five forty, Martin's company access card opened the underground garage.
At five forty-three, security cameras lost power.
At five forty-seven, a fire alarm forced the building to evacuate.
When systems returned, Martin was gone.
So was the encrypted server containing twelve years of vendor audits.
On Elias's desk, someone had left a child's yellow crayon.
Rachel recognized it as the one Lily dropped at dinner.
Daniel had entered the house after they left.
He had taken something small enough to become a message.
He was telling them he could still reach into their lives.
Then Maya received an alert from the bank.
The flagged overseas transfer had been released using a Whitmore executive authorization code.
May you like
The code belonged to Elias.
