Chapter 2: The Woman I Thought I Knew

The police arrived within twenty minutes.

I didn’t call them.

Dr. Grant did.

And for once in my life… I was grateful someone else made the decision for me.

Because I wasn’t thinking clearly.

I was thinking like a son.

Not like a husband.

Not like a father.

And that was no longer acceptable.

Two officers stepped into the room, calm but alert.

They spoke softly with Hannah first.

Then with me.

I told them everything.

Everything I remembered.

Everything I had ignored.

Every moment I now regretted.

“She was alone with your mother for four days?” one officer asked.

I nodded.

The weight of that truth nearly crushed me.

Meanwhile, across town…

They found Patricia Parker sitting comfortably in my living room.

Watching television.

As if nothing had happened.

She didn’t resist.

Didn’t panic.

Just sighed as they approached.

“Oh, for heaven’s sake,” she said. “Is this really necessary?”

May you like

According to the report…

She even smiled.
