Chapter 3: What the Walls Remembered

The next blow came from somewhere I never expected.
My neighbor.
Mrs. Alvarez.
A quiet woman who mostly kept to herself.
Until she knocked on my hospital room door.
“I didn’t know how to reach you,” she said. “But I couldn’t stay silent anymore.”
She handed me her phone.
A video.
Security footage from her front porch camera.
The angle partially captured our driveway.
And what I saw…
Made my blood run cold.
My mother.
Standing outside with Owen in her arms.
While Hannah—weak, barely able to stand—begged her to come back inside.
Even through the silent footage, I could feel the desperation.
The panic.
Then—
My mother grabbed Hannah’s arm.
Hard.
Yanked her forward.
Hannah collapsed to her knees.
And my mother didn’t help her up.
She just stood there.
Cold.
Unmoving.
Watching.
I couldn’t finish the video.
May you like
I didn’t need to.
The truth was undeniable.
