Chapter 17: Expanding the Horizon

By the following spring, Sarah had moved into her own cozy apartment downtown, and Horizon Creative had brought in enough revenue that Claire and Ethan could finally pull the trigger on their dream project: a complete kitchen renovation.

The house was chaotic. The old countertops were ripped out, the air constantly smelled faintly of sawdust, and they were surviving entirely on a microwave and a small air fryer set up in the dining room.

Despite the mess, the energy in the house was incredibly light. Ethan, thriving in his role as Senior Project Manager, took the lead on coordinating the contractors, while Claire designed the layout, opting for an open concept with warm oak cabinets, white quartz countertops, and a massive center island.

One Saturday morning, amidst the symphony of power drills and hammering, Ethan found Claire sitting on the edge of their bed. She was staring blankly at the wall, her hands resting in her lap.

"Hey," Ethan said, dusting off his jeans as he walked in. "The plumber just finished roughing in the sink. Are you okay? You look pale."

Claire blinked, looking up at him. A complex mix of emotions danced in her eyes—excitement, disbelief, and a tiny, lingering flicker of old anxiety.

She reached into the pocket of her cardigan and pulled out a small, white plastic stick, handing it to him.

Ethan looked down. Two pink lines stared back at him.

His jaw dropped. He looked from the test to Claire, a massive, brilliant smile breaking across his face. "Claire... are you serious? We're having another baby?"

Claire nodded, a nervous laugh escaping her. "I took three tests just to be sure. I'm about six weeks along."

Ethan dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around her waist and burying his face in her stomach. "This is amazing. This is the best news in the world."

He pulled back, noticing the slight tension still lingering around her eyes. He reached up, gently cupping her face. "What is it, baby? Talk to me."

"I'm thrilled, Ethan, I really am," Claire whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "But... I'm also scared. The last time I was pregnant, the postpartum period was a nightmare. I was so sick, and she... she almost killed me."

Ethan’s expression softened into one of fierce, protective devotion. He understood exactly where her mind was going. The trauma of Leo’s early days was deeply etched into her memory.

"Claire, listen to me," Ethan said, his voice a steady, grounding anchor. "Look at where we are. Look at who we are now. You are healthy, and your business is thriving. I have a job that actually lets me be present. And most importantly, the monster is gone. She is never coming back. This time, you get to experience everything the way it was supposed to be: safe, supported, and surrounded only by people who love you."

Claire took a deep breath, letting his words wash over her. The tight knot of fear in her chest began to loosen, replaced by a blossoming, radiant joy.

"You're right," she smiled, leaning her forehead against his. "This time is ours."
