Chapter 4: Ironclad Boundaries

The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of their bedroom, casting a warm, golden glow across the floorboards. Ethan had barely slept. He had spent the night dozing in a chair pulled up right next to Claire’s side of the bed, jumping at every slight shift in her breathing and every squeak from Leo’s bassinet.

When the clock on his nightstand flashed 7:00 AM, Ethan quietly stood up. He changed a stirring Leo's diaper with practiced efficiency, warmed a bottle, and fed his son in the quiet solitude of the living room. The remnants of yesterday’s forced feast were still sitting on the dining room table, a stark, sickening reminder of his mother’s cruelty.

With Leo settled in a baby bouncer, Ethan grabbed a trash bag. He methodically scraped the roasted chicken, the potatoes, and the intricate side dishes into the garbage. It felt therapeutic, a physical rejection of Eleanor’s twisted idea of care. He scrubbed the pots and pans until his knuckles ached, erasing every trace of her presence from their home.

At 8:30 AM, he made two phone calls. The first was to his boss, explaining he would be taking a few days of emergency family leave. The second was to a local locksmith.

By the time Claire woke up, pale but looking vastly more rested than the day before, the heavy metallic clicks of a drill echoed from the front porch.

She walked out of the bedroom, wrapped in her thickest fleece robe, and peeked around the hallway corner. "Ethan? What's going on?"

Ethan met her in the hallway, wiping his hands on a rag. "I told you we were changing the locks," he said gently, wrapping an arm around her shoulders to support her weight. "The locksmith is just finishing up the front door, and then he's doing the back. I also ordered a new smart doorbell with a camera. It gets delivered this afternoon."

Claire leaned against him, exhaling a long, shuddering breath. "You really meant it. About her not coming back."

"I meant every single word, Claire," Ethan said, his voice resolute. He pulled his cell phone from his pocket, opened his contacts, and navigated to his mother's name. Right in front of Claire, he hit 'Block Caller'. "She lost the privilege of being part of our lives the second she put yours at risk."

Claire wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her face in his chest. "Thank you," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. For the first time since Leo’s birth, the heavy, suffocating anxiety that usually accompanied the thought of her mother-in-law was entirely gone. The fortress was secured.
