Chapter 10: The Turn

Her car remained in the parking garage.

Her hospital identification card had been left inside the room.

Daniel claimed he did not know where she had gone.

Richard claimed he barely knew her.

Both statements were lies.

The police did not treat Vanessa as missing because evidence showed she had purchased a train ticket to New York.

Helen believed she was running.

Marcus believed she was negotiating.

I believed she had taken something.

At the airport, Vanessa had brought two suitcases.

One was checked.

The second remained with her.

When the trip collapsed, she took only the smaller suitcase.

The larger one was loaded into Richard’s SUV.

Security footage confirmed it.

Richard later told police the suitcase belonged to Lauren.

Lauren denied it.

A court order allowed investigators to search Richard’s home.

The suitcase was gone.

However, they found shredded financial statements in his garage.

They also found an empty flash-drive case in his desk.

Daniel’s entire scheme was unraveling because none of the conspirators trusted one another.

On Friday afternoon, Vanessa called me.

Her number was blocked.

I recognized her voice immediately.

“I need protection.”

I placed the call on speaker while Helen recorded.

“From Daniel?”

“From Richard.”

“Where are you?”

“I’m not telling you.”

“Then why call?”

“Because I have the files.”

“What files?”

“The original foundation reports.”

Helen wrote a note and turned it toward me.

KEEP HER TALKING.

“Why did you take them?”

“Insurance.”

“Against whom?”

“All of them.”

Vanessa’s voice trembled.

The confident woman from Gate 42 was gone.

“Daniel told me the money was his,” she continued.

“He said you inherited control by accident.”

“Inheritance is rarely accidental.”

“He said he built the hospital.”

“The hospital existed before he finished medical school.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew he was married.”

“Yes.”

“You kissed him in front of his children.”

A long silence followed.

“I believed the separation was real.”

“You also helped alter reports.”

“He said the numbers would be corrected after the loan.”

“Did you believe that too?”

“No.”

Her answer surprised me.

“Then why did you do it?”

“Because I wanted what he promised.”

At least she did not pretend to be innocent.

“What did he promise?”

“Marriage.”

“Money?”

“Yes.”

“A position?”

“Yes.”

“My home?”

Vanessa did not answer.

That silence was enough.

Daniel had promised her the house where I raised his children.

He had probably walked her through the rooms while I was away.

“Where are the files?” I asked.

“In a safe place.”

“What do you want?”

“Written protection from civil action.”

Helen shook her head.

“I cannot promise that.”

“Then I go to Richard.”

“He will destroy the evidence.”

“He offered me five hundred thousand dollars.”

“He intended to steal the entire amount from Daniel.”

Vanessa became quiet.

She had not known.

I continued.

“Richard opened overseas accounts under his control.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Lauren found the instructions.”

Vanessa cursed softly.

The alliances were breaking.

“Meet me tomorrow,” she said.

“Where?”

“The old Everett Research Building.”

The building had been closed for renovation.

Few people entered it on weekends.

“Why there?”

“Because Daniel doesn’t know I know about it.”

“Know about what?”

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“The room beneath his office.”

Then the call ended.

I looked at Helen.

Daniel’s office at the hospital did not have a basement.

But the old research building did.

My mother had designed it.

May you like

Beneath the main floor was a secure archive that had been sealed for fifteen years.

Daniel had somehow found a way inside.
