Chapter 14: The Other Woman's Awakening
Daniel requested immediate control over Ethan and Lily.
He claimed I had unlawfully isolated them.
He claimed I was using money to influence their loyalty.
He claimed my discovery of the affair caused an emotional breakdown.
His petition contained phrases taken directly from the notes in the hidden archive.
He still tried to use the plan even after we had exposed it.
Helen responded with the airport recording, the threatening messages, and the hospital evidence.
Because Ethan was seventeen and Lily was fourteen, the judge agreed to speak with both privately.
The night before the hearing, Lily sat beside me on the kitchen floor.
We had started there while looking for a missing charger.
Neither of us felt like standing.
“Did Vanessa come here before?” she asked.
I answered honestly.
“I don’t know.”
“I think she did.”
My chest tightened.
“Why?”
“Dad told me a hospital designer visited while you were in Boston.”
“When was that?”
“Last November.”
I remembered the trip.
My consulting team had spent four days evaluating a clinic merger.
Daniel called every night.
He said he missed me.
“What happened when she came?”
“She walked around the house.”
“Which rooms?”
“All of them.”
Lily’s voice became smaller.
“She went into your closet.”
I closed my eyes.
Daniel had shown Vanessa the life he promised to give her.
He had invited her into my home while my photographs still stood on the shelves.
“He told us not to tell you,” Lily continued.
“What reason did he give?”
“He said you were jealous of women from the hospital.”
“Did you believe him?”
“I didn’t know.”
She leaned against me.
“I should have told you.”
“You were a child being told to keep an adult’s secret.”
“I’m still sorry.”
I put my arm around her.
“We cannot change what happened.”
“What happens to us?”
“That depends on what you and Ethan want.”
“What do you want?”
“I want you safe.”
“Do you want us to stay?”
“Yes.”
The word came out immediately.
I had been careful not to pressure them.
But Lily deserved the truth.
“I want you both here.”
She began crying against my shoulder.
“I thought you would leave us because Dad cheated.”
“Your father’s choices do not erase my love for you.”
The next morning, we entered the courthouse through a side entrance.
Daniel arrived with Richard.
Vanessa arrived separately with her attorney.
Lauren sat behind Helen.
Every alliance had changed.
The judge first reviewed the guardianship documents.
Then she spoke with Ethan and Lily.
We waited for nearly an hour.
Daniel paced.
Richard whispered furiously into his phone.
Vanessa stared at the floor.
When the children returned, Lily sat beside me.
Ethan sat between us.
The judge addressed Daniel.
“Both children have expressed a clear desire to remain in the current residence with Ms. Bennett.”
Daniel stood.
“They have been manipulated.”
“Sit down, Dr. Bennett.”
He obeyed reluctantly.
The judge continued.
“Your son provided messages in which you threatened educational support.”
“That was taken out of context.”
“The context is visible.”
She then addressed me.
“Ms. Bennett, are you prepared to continue serving as guardian while the investigation proceeds?”
“Yes.”
“Do you intend to restrict reasonable communication with their father?”
“No.”
Daniel looked surprised.
I continued.
“I will follow any safe communication plan ordered by the court.”
The judge nodded.
Supervised visits were approved.
Daniel’s request for immediate custody was denied.
Outside the courtroom, he approached Ethan.
“You chose her.”
Ethan looked at him.
“No, Dad.”
