Chapter 2 - The Awakening

Claire’s heels clicked frantically against the polished marble floor.

She reached the threshold just as Arthur loaded his suitcases into the trunk of a waiting taxi.

"Arthur, wait!" she screamed again, clutching her phone like a lifeline.

Arthur paused for a fraction of a second.

He did not turn around.

He calmly closed the trunk with a solid, satisfying thud.

Logan finally snapped out of his passive trance.

He hurried to his wife's side, his brow furrowed in deep confusion.

"Claire, what is it?" Logan asked.

"What just happened?"

Claire turned to him, her face completely drained of color.

"The money," she gasped, struggling to catch her breath.

"The main account is completely empty."

Logan stared at her, entirely uncomprehending.

"Empty?" he repeated.

"That is impossible."

She shoved the smartphone roughly into his chest.

Logan looked down at the glowing banking application.

The glaring red zero seemed to mock the expensive tailored suit he wore.

Down the driveway, Arthur opened the rear door of the car.

He slid into the worn leather seat and softly pulled the door shut.

"To the airport, please," Arthur told the driver.

The driver nodded and shifted the vehicle into gear.

Through the tinted window, Arthur watched his son and daughter-in-law standing on the porch.

They looked small and panicked in the shadow of the massive house.

It was a house Arthur had paid for in full.

For years, he had quietly funded their lavish, unrestrained lifestyle.

He had poured his retirement funds into Logan's failing business ventures.

He had endured Claire's endless condescension just to remain close to his only child.

But today, their cruel attempt at an eviction had crossed a final, unforgivable line.

They thought they were tossing out a helpless, dependent old man.

They forgot that Arthur was the one who had built the family fortune from scratch.

He had always maintained primary control of the master trust.

It was a quiet safeguard he had prayed he would never actually need to use.

As the car rolled past the wrought-iron gates, Arthur let out a long, heavy sigh.

The sharp, stinging pain of betrayal still gnawed at his chest.

Yet, a new feeling of profound relief began to gently wash over him.

He was no longer a prisoner in a home where he was despised.

Arthur leaned his head against the cool glass of the window.

It was finally time to rebuild his own life.
