Chapter 6 - The Illusion Cracks

The rain had finally stopped when Arthur and Marcus stepped out of the law office.
The crisp Seattle air smelled vaguely of pine trees and damp concrete.
Arthur held a thick manila folder tucked securely under his arm.
It contained the newly signed and heavily fortified trust documents.
His life savings were now permanently locked away, entirely safe from Logan and Claire.
"I know a local real estate agent who has a nice little cottage by the water," Marcus suggested.
"It is quite small, but it has a beautiful, overgrown garden."
Arthur smiled warmly, the mere idea of a quiet garden sounding like absolute heaven.
"Let us go take a look," Arthur agreed without hesitation.
Meanwhile, Logan sat alone behind his massive mahogany desk at his downtown office.
The panoramic view of the city skyline usually filled him with a deep sense of pride.
Today, it just made him feel incredibly small and entirely fraudulent.
His office phone rang loudly, shattering the heavy, suffocating silence in the room.
It was his chief financial officer, Sarah.
"Logan, we have a massive emergency on our hands," Sarah said, her voice tight with immediate anxiety.
"The bank just froze our primary corporate line of credit without any prior warning."
Logan closed his eyes and firmly massaged his throbbing temples.
"I know, Sarah," Logan replied quietly.
"What do you mean, you know?" Sarah demanded, her professional tone slipping into panic.
"We have payroll due on Friday, and we absolutely cannot cover it without that credit line."
Logan had spent the last five years pretending he was a self-made business genius.
He had carefully hidden the fact that his elderly father was quietly guaranteeing every single corporate loan.
Now, that carefully crafted illusion was completely shattered.
"Tell the entire staff to go home early today," Logan instructed, his voice breaking slightly.
"I will try to figure something out."
He hung up the phone and stared blankly at a framed photo sitting on his desk.
It was an old, faded picture of him and Arthur, taken long before Claire had entered the picture.
Arthur looked so genuinely proud of his son in the photograph.
Logan felt a sudden, sharp pang of intense guilt pierce through his chest.

He had traded his father's unconditional love for a cold, superficial, and heavily indebted lifestyle.
And now, because of his own arrogance, he was about to lose absolutely everything.
