Chapter 14: The Signature
The trial began six months later.
Vittorio faced charges for conspiracy, kidnapping, attempted murder, unlawful imprisonment, bribery, and organized financial crimes.
Vanessa faced many of the same charges.
Her pregnancy was visible now.
She entered the courtroom in a plain navy dress, one hand resting over the child she had once used as a weapon.
Her attorneys presented the signed order.
According to the document, Alessandro had approved Daniel’s elimination three years earlier.
Reporters filled every seat.
The prosecution’s case began to fracture.
Alessandro’s signature appeared genuine.
The authorization code belonged to his private office.
The date matched the week of Daniel’s accident.
Daniel stared at Alessandro from across the courtroom.
“Did you sign it?”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Alessandro looked toward Matteo.
Matteo had survived Vanessa’s gunshot and entered protective custody.
He admitted impersonating Alessandro in the video, but denied forging the document.
Vittorio remained silent.
Vanessa smiled.
The answer came from Emma.
She sat outside the courtroom drawing with colored pencils while Rosa watched her.
When I showed her a copy of the document, she pointed at the lion symbol stamped beside Alessandro’s signature.
“That lion has the wrong tail.”
The official Moretti seal showed a lion’s tail curling to the left.
The seal on Vanessa’s document curled to the right.
It was the personal stamp once used by Antonio’s younger brother.
Vittorio.
Federal experts examined the ink and paper.
The document had been created eight months earlier, not three years earlier.
Alessandro was cleared.
Then Marco testified.
He admitted that Vittorio ordered Daniel’s death. Marco had refused to carry it out and secretly warned Antonio’s network, allowing them to stage Daniel’s accident.
He also admitted helping Vittorio cover up other crimes.
“I told myself loyalty required silence,” Marco said. “But silence only protected the guilty.”
Vittorio was convicted on every major charge.
Vanessa was convicted of kidnapping, attempted murder, fraud, conspiracy, and evidence destruction.
As officers prepared to remove her, she asked to speak to me.
“You think you won because they believe you now,” she whispered.
“This was never about making people believe me.”
“What was it about?”
“Making sure Emma never learns to stay silent.”
Vanessa glanced toward my daughter.
For the first time, her confidence disappeared completely.
Then she leaned closer.
“Daniel is still hiding something from you.”
That night, I confronted him.
He admitted there was one final truth.
Before disappearing, he had been given a choice.
He could save his own life.
Or return home and risk leading Vittorio directly to Emma and me.
Daniel chose to disappear.
But Antonio had offered him another option afterward.
A new identity.
A new country.
A permanent escape.
Daniel had almost accepted it.
On the morning he planned to leave forever, he received a video of Emma’s first steps.
That was when he decided to remain near us and finish the investigation.
“I loved you,” he said.
“But part of me was still willing to leave.”
